Jyn knelt before the magistrate, her head bowed submissively. Nyn’s backside, she hated being made to feel so small.

More, she hated leaving Taurin alone so long.

What happened after she was taken? Had Gorym been arrested, too? Would Taurin be well enough to stay out of sight?

At last, the bailiff nudged her with his boot, indicating it was her turn.

She tensed, waiting for the magistrate to address her from his dais.

“Well, well. Jyn the Pirate. We’ve been looking for you for a long time. It was thoughtful of you to bring your activities inland.”

“I am sorry, m’lord, but I know not what you speak. I am a simple trader.” She dared a look through her lashes at the magistrate.

He nodded at the bailiff, who grabbed her arm and yanked up her sleeve.

The brand marking her as a victim of the king’s justice, though no longer red and tender, was still clearly visible.

“Please, m’lord, that was many years ago. I am an honest citizen.”

“Then why did the king’s guards see you with a band of thieves only this morning?”

Jyn’s heart sank. “Can you be sure it was me? I was nowhere near any bandits. I was at the market this morning.”

“I see. So this isn’t yours, then?”

Jyn looked up. From his finger dangled a gold chain on which hung a large pearl, set in a delicate housing of find gold shaped like an open oyster shell.

The necklace Taurin had given her, to remind her of the sea, the day she’d agreed to join his band on land…
