The Amulet Saga, Volume Two: The Defector
Rose pulled her violet cloak around her shoulders. She glanced both ways as she left her chambers to make sure no one was watching, and headed down the corridor toward the stable.
“Anarosia, darling, are you going somewhere?”
Rose’s heart stuttered. She turned to face her mother.
Mother glided along the marble floor, looking immaculate in her blue silk gown, with her hair pulled smoothly back into a bun behind her diadem.
“I’m going to the South Village, remember? Father wanted me to meet with the merchants.”
“Oh, just look at your hair. Did your maid lose your brush? You can’t go out looking like that.”
Rose tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, not that it mattered. A dozen more stuck out in every direction. It didn’t matter how many times her maid brushed it or how many pins she used to secure it, within minutes, it always frayed and fell.
Mother stroked Rose’s cheek. “Have you been using the potion Ada made for your freckles?”
“I don’t need a potion to get rid of my freckles, Mother. They’re fine where they are.” She toyed with the edge of her cloak, hoping her mother wouldn’t sense her anxiety.
Mother sighed. “I don’t know what to do with you sometimes. Come along, your father wants a word with you.”
Rose clenched her fists. She was so close. But she had to maintain the illusion of normalcy…
