This week I am honored to bring to all of you fabulous readers my review of War of Attrition by Frank Creed. Have you heard of it? Where the heck have you been? It is book 2 in Frank’s Underground series. Book 1 won 2006 ELFIE Best Sci-Fi Novel.

Without further ado….
Imagine, if you will, a book that reads with the swagger of Dick Tracy, but has all the bang and imagination of The Matrix. Add in a some kickin’ guns, sword play, wrinkly brains of knowledge, Spirit Walking, gangers, Neros, mind-speak and God’s Word and you can begin to understand why I love this book and the one prior. Frank is a master of word-play and a genius of the analogy. I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions. I call that a good time.
Frank writes first person/past tense and we once again jump into the young mind of Calamity Kid. He is The One State’s #2 Most Wanted Terrorist. The price on his head rings up faster than the National Debt…maybe not that fast, but you get my point.
The One State stays hot and heavy on his tail.What crime is he guilty of? Believing in God? That’s not really the crime in the year 2037. The Word of God is though. One State has One Church, and it is believe like they do (worship the government) or be tagged a Fundi-Terrorist. The Bible has been outlawed and only the Body of Christ has a copy. That is wrinkled into their brains of course by reformation. Want to know what that is? Read the book.
Calamity is accompanied by his sister- hacker extraordinaire- e-girl, wise and proper Grandpa, grumpy and lovable Tinker and a whole cast of new and cool characters. My favorite new character and possible love interest for Calamity Kid in the series is that Latino lovely named Heartbreaker. Is she the real deal or a spy for One State? Want to know? Read the book.
What I came away with from reading War of Attrition and is a constant theme in Franks writing…we must allow God to move in our lives. HE is capable of anything if we just allow HIM to work.
I have a serious issue with Mr. Creed that may see him with a few anvil-related knots. I have to wait for the next book. He assures me he is trying. I guess I could give him a break considering he did use the mighty anvil on page 232. That is nearly the end of the book. He better thank his cheesecake he was so wise. How can a gal not love the anvil?

Loved the first, can’t wait to gobble up the second! I agree that Frank’s writing reads like pulp fiction–hardboiled detective style–and the action is Matrixical. I often picture Frank’s work in comic book form. Now THAT would be cool. Graphic Art this, Frank!

Great review! I had forgotten about Dick Tracy, but that was a good comparison (for those of you too young to remember this detective comic, sorry). After I read Flashpoint, I told Frank he was my favorite living author. “The price on his head rings up faster than the National Debt”…Frank has to love that line of yours. So fitting.
