Anvil Review- War of Attrition by Frank Creed

This week I am honored to bring to all of you fabulous readers my review of War of Attrition by Frank Creed. Have you heard of it? Where the heck have you been? It is book 2 in Frank’s Underground series. Book 1 won 2006 ELFIE Best Sci-Fi Novel.

As always, Peyton will draw two names from his fantabulous hat in one week’s time. Sound like fun? Well, hold on a minute. I need to tell you how to enter. There are several ways.

1. Leave a comment, silly. That’s one entry. Do it again tomorrow for another.

2. Post a link on your Facebook or your own blog. You have to tell me and leave a link here for me to go see your sharing. If you are a friend of mine on Facebook, just tag me when you put up the link. That’s possibly two entries. Do it again tomorrow for the interview and that’s two more shots.

3. Go like The Lost Genre Guild on Facebook.  **HERE** Of course, you need to tell me that also but this one will get you two entries.

4. Buy Frank’s first book of The Underground series, Flashpoint in paperback ***HERE*** or ***HERE***, or Kindle version ***HERE*** and earn five entries more. In order to earn these entries you must email me a copy of your receipt of purchase to dmgraham2001[at]yahoo[dot]com.

That’s a whole lot of chances to get your name in for one of two super-duper signed copies. What are you waiting for? Oh yes, you want to know what I think.

Without further ado….

Imagine, if you will, a book that reads with the swagger of Dick Tracy, but has all the bang and imagination of The Matrix. Add in a some kickin’ guns, sword play, wrinkly brains of knowledge, Spirit Walking, gangers, Neros, mind-speak and God’s Word and you can begin to understand why I love this book and the one prior. Frank is a master of word-play and a genius of the analogy. I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions. I call that a good time.

Frank writes first person/past tense and we once again jump into the young mind of Calamity Kid. He is The One State’s #2 Most Wanted Terrorist. The price on his head rings up faster than the National Debt…maybe not that fast, but you get my point.

The One State stays hot and heavy on his tail. What crime is he guilty of? Believing in God? That’s not really the crime in the year 2037. The Word of God is though. One State has One Church, and it is believe like they do (worship the government) or be tagged a Fundi-Terrorist. The Bible has been outlawed and only the Body of Christ has a copy. That is wrinkled into their brains of course by reformation. Want to know what that is? Read the book.

Calamity is accompanied by his sister- hacker extraordinaire- e-girl, wise and proper Grandpa, grumpy and lovable Tinker and a whole cast of new and cool characters. My favorite new character and possible love interest for Calamity Kid in the series is that Latino lovely named Heartbreaker. Is she the real deal or a spy for One State? Want to know? Read the book.

What I came away with from reading War of Attrition and is a constant theme in Franks writing…we must allow God to move in our lives. HE is capable of anything if we just allow HIM to work.

I have a serious issue with Mr. Creed that may see him with a few anvil-related knots. I have to wait for the next book. He assures me he is trying. I guess I could give him a break considering he did use the mighty anvil on page 232. That is nearly the end of the book. He better thank his cheesecake he was so wise. How can a gal not love the anvil?

Anvil Rating 5.0

Thank you all for joining me for another Anvil Review. Please stop by tomorrow to find out what a literary zombie is and how you can protect yourself from one. Tell your friends to enter for their chance to win one of two signed copies of War of Attrition. The winners will be announced on Tuesday, February 15th. And for the love of cheesecake, share the anvil goodness.

  1. Fun post, Diane. Well done.

  2. My dearest youngest daughter,
    sounds good, sign me up!

  3. I need a copy of this book! I’ve already got the first one and I’m ready for Number Two! Throw my name in the hat, yo 🙂

  4. Put me in for the drawing too. I’ve already read the book. My review is here. But I want to win a copy for my youth pastor. We gave him a copy of Flashpoint and he loved it. Had the entire youth group reading it and discussing. Don’t worry. If I don’t win one, I’ll be buying the gift copy for sure. Looking forward to the interview, Diane.

  5. This book sounds really fun. I will be hitting hubby up for book number one when he gets home. Sis, you make your reviews so enjoyable to read, thanks.

  6. Sounds like a good read. You can include me in on that drawing too. 😀

  7. I like fun reads–sign me up too! *duck behind anvil*

  8. What happens when the anvil lands on the cheesecake?

  9. Loved the first, can’t wait to gobble up the second! I agree that Frank’s writing reads like pulp fiction–hardboiled detective style–and the action is Matrixical. I often picture Frank’s work in comic book form. Now THAT would be cool. Graphic Art this, Frank!

    Enjoyed the review!

    • Thanks, Lydia. I have you down for an entry.

I picture Frank’s work in all black and white…other than golden eyes. 😀

  10. Fun interview. 🙂

    Blessings!

  11. Sorry…review 😉

  12. Awesome book!! Can’t wait for the next…

  13. Pssst. I like Lost Genre World on facebook. Just sayin’.

    😉

  14. I’ve heard so much about Frank’s books, and am dying to read them. I’ve kinda been holding off, waiting for them to come out for Nook. Hm, hasn’t happened yet. Throw another cheesecake his way for that ;).

    Great review, Diane.

  15. That’s GUILD I like–The Lost Genre Guild, not WORLD. But hey, it takes me to other worlds. Eh? Eh? Did I cover there? 😉

    • I got you, Lydia. I am doped up on Benadryl today. I didn’t even notice. It is amazing that I have not hurt myself with my anvil.

  16. Great review! I had forgotten about Dick Tracy, but that was a good comparison (for those of you too young to remember this detective comic, sorry). After I read Flashpoint, I told Frank he was my favorite living author. “The price on his head rings up faster than the National Debt”…Frank has to love that line of yours. So fitting.

  17. You’re on my Facebook. Great review. Very energetic.

  18. I’d like a copy of Franks book 🙂

  19. I’m not much of a “religious” person but I am a reader and this book sounds interesting! On a fixed income, so can’t get the first one right now but will put it on the wish list. Frank is one of my “friends” on FB because we play the same games. I had no idea I had a talented author as a friend. Yay me! Throw my name in the hat please:)

    • Hi, Sandy. I don’t think any of us are “religious” either. We all love God and write in a world view that reflects the love of Christ. “Religion” is man made and therefore flawed. Whereas God is perfect. 😀

I’ve got you entered and thank you so much for coming by.

  20. Do they also outlaw The Matrix?? I seem to remember that there is a character in it named “Trinity”!!

I guess anything by Frank would be outlawed since his last name is Creed! Anything by the LGG Moderator would also be outlawed because her name is Grace!

    Humorically yours,

    Forrest

  21. Wow, mom told me to read this. It’s my first time reading on this blog site and i can guarantee i’ll be helping my mom get dad to buy this book!

  22. Thank you, Diane, for a new batch of fans. And yes, I did envy: “The price on his head rings up faster than the National Debt…” Very nice!

  23. My dearest Frank,
Oh my, Look at the Lord work through you. Praise his name!

  24. If I win, give my book to Sandy Wouk, I’ll read yours Diane.

  25. Is it my imagination, Diane, or have you just reached a record number of comments for an entry on this blog of ours? (or maybe not “just” reached, but have already reached it a few comments back or so)

  26. Winners are Lara Bowers and David James. Congratulations!
