Renegade Project #19: The Upper Hand

You pull back the blade and wrap it in the cloth. “It is probably best for me to hold onto this until then. Afterall, as you saw, it’s a bit reactive to even casual touch. I’m far more expendable than you and it’s my job to keep you safe as well.” Before Galen can reply, you say, “In the meanwhile, I will immediately seek out Natin to see what info he might have found and then shall I ensure the Royal Guards arrive quickly? Do you wish to address them yourself or would you prefer I give them the details and send them to search right away?”

“Yes, yes,” Galen stammers. “Just tell them what they need to know to find my daughter.”

“Then if you will excuse me, I will attend to my duties.” You tuck the weapon back in your tunic as you bow.

You find Natin in the courtyard, just returning, with head hung low.

“What information do we have to work with at this point?”

He sighed and glared at you. “Five men broke into Selyna’s chambers in the middle of the night. She fought back – there was blood smeared on the floor. The ransom note was pinned to the connecting door between her chamber and father’s. Then five horses with riders charged out the main gate, which had been strangely left open.”

“Any known identities outside of Malor? distinguishing features? And what about the horses? Did they come from the stables here? If so, again, any with distinguishing features?”

Natin scowled. “Don’t you get it? It’s over! Gallino has her.”

“Well, his men do, apparently, yes. However, it’s far from over.”

“He has men scattered everywhere, spying on us and ready to betray us. He’ll know as soon as we do anything to get her back. Any move against him and she dies.”

“True, her life is at risk and I am sorry, but I think this time Gallino has far more liabilities than us.”

Options:

Tell Natin about the girl in your chamber and have him get her out of the house and to safety. Hopefully then she can report her tale to the proper authorities
-OR-
Tell Natin about the illegal weapons and/or the powder and have him report the crimes to authorities he trusts, while you focus on finding Selyna as you agreed
-OR-
Keep the info quiet until you can report it yourself, and focus on your job.

  1. Ren, Thanks for posting another installment! This is getting good! 😀

I like option two best this time around!

  2. A variant on number 3: Coax more information from Natin with vage references to Gallino’s liabilities since you don’t have much to work on so far (if he wants details remind him of what he said about potential spys), report to the Royal Guard, and then work on getting Selyna back as promised.

  3. I vote for:

Tell Natin about the illegal weapons and/or the powder and have him report the crimes to authorities he trusts, while you focus on finding Selyna as you agreed.

You need an ally you can trust. Additionally Natin is going to have a better idea of who to relay “official” information to so that it doesn’t get redirected.

  4. Tell Natin about the illegal weapons and/or the powder and have him report the crimes to authorities he trusts, while you focus on finding Selyna as you agreed

    Yes, this.

  5. I agree with Jlrowan and Stanley Black. Let’s see what it’s like to agree with the group.

  6. I think I’ll have to go with #2.
