A four-book contract and a viral meme. Good year.

I love Facebook’s “Year in Review” feature — your 20 biggest moments.

I had a really good year!

Now, I knew that already, but seeing it condensed like that really brought it home.

For years, my big hairy audacious goal was a four-book contract for my fantasy series. When that actually happened—I about fell over. I also got to work with an illustrator on the map. Because a fantasy novel has to have a map!

A meme I designed for Terri Main now has almost a thousand shares. And that’s just on Facebook. I’ve seen it on Google Plus, too, though I didn’t share it there.

normal writer

My contemporary novel Hope and Pride won first place in the Florida Writers Association’s Royal Palm Literary Awards inspirational romance category unpublished.

I taught at our local ACFW chapter as well as at the FWA Youth Conference.

And, huh-looo, Realm Makers!

I didn’t entirely achieve my writing goals. I had hoped to have Prophet’s Chronicle Book Two finished by now. Very nearly there. Honest.

And Hope and Pride doesn’t have a publisher—yet—but I collected one of the best rejections I’ve ever gotten: “Your writing is really very strong, and you have a unique voice. Unfortunately…I didn’t quite feel that your story had a strong enough hook to really help it stand out.” I did get another request for a full after that, so it’s under consideration again.

Goals for 2014

My top goal for this year is to finish Book Two in time for my March 1 deadline, if not sooner.

With Alara’s Call due out…soon, I hope…I’m going to be working on the launch and borrowing some ideas from Janalyn Voigt. I’ve been on launch teams for two of her books, and yeah, you bet I took notes. 😉

My main writing focus for the year, after I turn in Book Two, will be Book Three, which is practically writing itself, distracting me from Book Two.

But I also hope to give Hope and Pride a strong enough hook and make some progress on its sequel. To that end, I hope to visit North Carolina again, where those books are set.

My other big dream for this year is to see all of you at Realm Makers 2014. It’s going to be fantastic, and I pray God will make a way for each of you to be there.

  1. Kudos, Kristen! (Is the posted image the one you designed?)

  2. Hey there! I found your blog while searching for a “writer meme” photo on Google. I couldn’t find any copyright or license information, would you mind if I used this in one of my posts?
