Life is full of distractions, and as writers we are not immune to the temptations. Something is constantly pulling us out of our worlds and back into reality–and we let it happen! Will talked about being exhausted, Ren talked about fear, I’ve talked about the busyness of everyday life several times.
We all have distractions.
Some are big, and some are small. Some are short-lived, and some take days, weeks, or months (kids take years!).
Many writers can attest to the fact that we are nortorious procrastinators. We want to be doing anything else but writing just as much as we wish we were sitting at the computer, pounding out the next Great American Novel. If we let them, the distractions can take an entire day and turn it into a unproductive guilt trip. Sure, the laundry might be done. The trash taken out. The kids got to go to the park for a few hours. But did any writing get done? Nope!
It’s time to get our priorities straight!
It’s time to get our BICHOK on!
It’s time to attack the blank page with all the force of God’s mighty winds!
Oh, look, dinner is ready.
It some places, they have a tradition where they light a bonfire and then people take turns throwing in things that remind them of bad things in their past, or things they want to change about themselves. So, I say we start a figurative bonfire right here at the start of a new week. A new day–a second chance. Let’s toss our distractions, our doubts, anything that is holding us back into the fire.
And then we can walk away and get down to work.
